Program Director, Nigeria

The Program Director, Nigeria will lead new program development in Nigeria in close consultation with Accordia’s senior management.  This position offers the rare opportunity for a creative and motivated professional to be part of a start-up team leading the establishment and growth of the West African Infectious Diseases Institute (WAIDI).  WAIDI will be modeled on the highly successful Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and will conduct essential research and systems strengthening activities, with the goal of strengthening local governments’ ability to set effective health policy, improve practice in the public and private sectors, and ensure better health outcomes for their populations. The successful candidate will be charged with building relationships with the Nigerian government, academic institutions, the Nigerian and West African diaspora, other governments and the private sector; representing Accordia and WAIDI to U.S. Government agencies and other potential donors; and supporting Accordia corporate leadership in planning and implementation of activities in Nigeria. 

Accordia recently established WAIDI as a multi-institutional Center of Excellence for research and training in Nigeria.  WAIDI is based in Abuja but relies on the strong engagement of various universities throughout the region; integrating their faculty and resources, and augmenting their capacity through international linkages and specialized infrastructure.  The Institute will be locally owned and autonomous, strategically linking and supporting the region’s universities and other key health sector stakeholders, with the goal of strengthening local governments’ ability to set effective health policy, improve practice in the public and private sectors, and ensure better health outcomes for their populations.

Position Location: Washington, DC / Abuja, Nigeria

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • With senior management team, contributes to strategic and long-range planning for WAIDI and its programs in Nigeria and western Africa. 
  • With guidance from legal counsel, develops a specific plan for gradual WAIDI board expansion over the next several years.
  • Continues to expand and manage the West African Academic Alliance, and coordinates the role of the WAIDI Steering Committee in finalizing the strategic plan for WAIDI. 
  • Serves as Accordia’s Country Lead for Nigeria and manages the internal cross-functional team to set priorities, develop workplans, and assign roles and responsibilities to achieve agreed upon annual goals for WAIDI. 
  • With support from Accordia’s Director of Program Development, identifies and pursues incremental funding opportunities for WAIDI programming, and pursues major resources for WAIDI infrastructure and multi-year strategic plan. 
  • Keeps Accordia staff well informed of the funding landscape in Nigeria, including available opportunities, pending proposals, and major awards to other organizations.
  • Manages the planning and implementation of grant funded activities and identifies potential partners for joint-programming opportunities.  Assists the Grants Management team to ensure effective grant monitoring and reporting to funding partners as needed.
  • Oversees the establishment of administrative infrastructure and systems, including development of institutional policies, recruitment and managing of Abuja-based staff, negotiation of various forms of WAIDI membership, and management of contracts with local vendors.
  • Builds relationships with relevant Nigerian government agencies, major corporations, foundations and other potential partners.
  • Represents Accordia to U.S. Government, e.g. USAID, CDC, Department of Defense and other relevant stakeholders, and attends local meetings as appropriate.
  • Represents Accordia to local media as requested by Senior Management.

Qualifications:

Education:  Advanced degree(s) in public or international health.  Candidates with a medical degree will be given preferential considerations.   

Experience: 

  • Minimum of ten years professional experience in global health or international development, involving program development, strategic planning, and/or business planning and budgeting.
  • Prior work experience in Nigeria essential.
  • Prior work experience in an academic and/or research setting preferred.

Essential Requirements:

  • Skilled at thinking strategically in a global health and infectious disease context, particularly as relates to health systems strengthening and infectious disease strategy and intervention.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively on complex global health issues, in writing and through public speaking.
  • Superior organizational skills, project management skills, and previous managerial experience, including set-up of organizational infrastructure and procedures helpful. 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a long-term vision with a unique attention to detail in a fast paced environment. 
  • Proven success in building, maintaining, and managing long-term relationships with colleagues, consultants, partners and funders.
  • Position may be based in Washington, DC or Abuja, Nigeria and could require 30% travel.

International Clinical Evaluation Consultant

Accordia Global Health Foundation is seeking an International Clinical Evaluation expert to serve as a short-term consultant for the CDC-funded MENTORS operational research project in Uganda. The MENTORS project is a 2-year randomized-cluster control trial to determine the effectiveness of using on-site clinical mentorship to improve the clinical knowledge and competence of mid-level practitioners in providing HIV and TB care. Improvements in MLP knowledge and skills will be assessed through using case scenarios, clinical observations and facility performance.

The International Clinical Evaluation Consultant will provide technical expertise in clinical evaluation to a team of Ugandan clinical and research personnel working on the MENTORS project. The Consultant will review and revise the case scenarios and clinical observation tools. The Consultant will also review and provide feedback on the facility performance surveillance system. The Consultant will then develop a plan for administering the evaluation tools and analyzing the data. After the data is collected the consultant will provide support to the data team to guide data analysis and report writing. It is expected that apart from training the clinical data collection team, all work will be done remotely, with frequent communication with the teams based in Uganda and Washington, DC.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and revise clinical case scenarios and clinical observations tools in collaboration with Ugandan team.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOP) for the administration of clinical case scenarios and clinical observation tools
  • Develop plan and process for piloting tools, including providing guidance on piloting of tools.
  • Train local consultants in the administration of the clinical case scenarios and clinical observations tools to be administered at baseline, end line, 6 months post-, and 12 months post- intervention.
  • Work with Ugandan team to develop entry screens for entry of data.
  • Develop scoring system for tools in collaboration with Ugandan team.
  • Develop detailed statistical analysis plans for the clinical case scenarios and clinical observations. Provide on-going support and guidance for data analysis and report writing with regard to the clinical assessment and case scenarios.

Qualifications:

  • MD or Nursing degree with  significant clinical education/clinical training evaluation and research experience highly preferred
  • Expertise and experience in designing and implementing  operations research studies
  • Experience conducting statistical analysis for cluster randomized control trials
  • Understanding of HIV/AIDS and TB clinical care
  • Experience working in Africa or other developing countries
  • Willingness to travel to Uganda for approximately 1 week.

Global Health Programs Intern

The internship is available from May 2013 – August 2013(start and finish dates are negotiable). Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research to support the development of articles and publications – conduct literature surveys on various global health topics
  • Assisting Global Health Programs staff in the development of communication materials
  • Assisting in the preparation of project reports and materials
  • Assisting with the administration of existing programs – backstopping various projects
  • Researching future funding opportunities from U.S. Government institutions, foundations, private sector, and others
  • Contributing to grant research, grant writing and  materials coordination
  • Providing regular updates on Global Health news and events
  • Assisting in the coordination of meetings, conference calls and travel logistics
  • Helping with office reception duties, including answering phones, greeting visitors, and other admin duties as necessary

Education

Preference is given to senior undergraduate or graduate students majoring in global/public health, international affairs, African studies or communications. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate degree program. (recent graduates will be considered)

Global Health Research Intern

  • Creation of data analysis files, including coding to create dependent and independent variables based on several  datasets and multiple variables
  • Conducting research to support the development of articles and publications – conduct literature surveys on various global health topics
  • Assisting Global Health Programs staff in the development of communication materials
  • Assisting in the preparation of project reports and materials
  • Assisting with the administration of existing programs – backstopping various projects
  • Researching future funding opportunities from U.S. Government institutions, foundations, private sector, and others
  • Contributing to grant research, grant writing and materials coordination
  • Assisting in the coordination of meetings, conference calls and travel logistics
  • Helping with office reception duties, including answering phones, greeting visitors, and other admin duties as necessary

Education

Communications and Development Intern

Accordia Global Health Foundation is seeking one creative and skilled communicator to assist with a variety of projects including (but not limited to) graphic design, social media, event planning and execution, and fundraising and development.

Specific duties might include:

  • Maintaining Accordia’s social media accounts
  • Creating and assembling communications materials, including brochures, newsletters, and e-mail blasts
  • Identifying potential projects, partners, or funders
  • Helping plan and execute events
  • Maintaining Accordia’s contact and donor databases
  • Providing administrative support
  • Other duties as assigned

Projects will be distributed based on the intern’s individual interests and skills. Internship can count for class credit and will last a minimum of one semester. Ideal position for students or recent graduates. Extensive coursework in communications, public/media relations, international relations, public health, or related fields preferred. Knowledge of or experience in developing regions from around the world a plus.
