Infectious Diseases Institute
A Model to be Replicated throughout Africa
The Infectious Diseases Institute’s mission is to build the capacity of healthcare systems in Africa for the delivery of sustainable, high-quality care and prevention of HIV/AIDS and related infectious diseases through training, research, and advanced clinical services.
The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in Uganda was founded by Accordia Global Health Foundation and its Academic Alliance, with a strong and secure multi-year funding commitment from Pfizer Inc. These partners envisioned a Center of Excellence in infectious diseases located in Africa, enabling continuous innovation and responsiveness to the most pressing regional health concerns. The center would function at the intersection of training, research, and advanced clinical care to promote the highest quality of standards of infectious disease care. It would be established in a world-class setting to enable international standards of research, and to retain Africa’s best and brightest.
Today, IDI is a well-established institutional partner to many and an integral part of the Ugandan health system. IDI serves as our model for a sustainable, locally- owned, regional Center of Excellence that is transforming the quality of care across the continent. Having overseen its establishment and evolution, Accordia now contributes to IDI’s ongoing development through the provisions of targeted technical assistance, program development consultation, and fundraising support.
